One Room Challenge...Extended

Well, the one room challenge did not go as planned and I thought I would FINALLY share my experiences. I really wanted to be a part of the one room challenge reveal, but when it came down to it there were just some delays out of my control that made it very clear that wasn't going to happen. It also came down to me wanting to use very specific products in our home and I wasn't willing to change to meet the deadline. I'm very into healthy eating and natural products, which also extends to anything used in our interiors. It was important to me to find the healthiest options for doing our powder room. Our wallpaper installer insisted that we first put up a wallpaper primer. Let me explain the reasoning behind first putting up a primer before wallpapering. First, if you have paint already on your walls most likely it is a latex paint. When latex paint is in contact with anything wet for an extended time (your wallpaper) it can soften the paint into a rubbery film and it will lose it's integrity. The primer provides a sound smooth surface to apply the paper to. A primer will also prevent penetration through the latex into the sheetrock, meaning that if you want to ever remove the wallpaper it won't leaves big holes in your sheetrock when you remove it. Ok, so now that I have explained the primer, let's get on with the one I chose. It was very important to me to find a product that had no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). Products that contain these release emissions when you use them. Some VOCs are dangerous to human health and some cause harm to the environment. There is a range of toxicity and different variables of course as to the effect of these on each individual. To me, the less you have in your house the better! Alright, get to the primer already! There were only low VOC wallpaper primers available locally, so after some research I found one with zero VOCs. Here is the product I chose...

This great primer not only has zero VOCs, but also no formaldehyde. I ordered it from Amazon and it was supposed to come a good 4 days before my installer was scheduled. I had scheduled my installer at the very beginning of the challenge because she is very in demand. She was one of the only ones I found that had previously installed Farrow and Ball and had experience with papers that weren't pre-pasted. Well, long story short the primer that I ordered from Amazon got delayed and then never showed. They did give us our money back, but I had to re-schedule with our installer, and that was the end right there. I couldn't get back on her schedule for another 3 weeks, too late for the challenge deadline. I finally ordered the primer from Home Depot and it came right on time. Here is a link for the primer, if you are interested!

I talked about Farrow and Ball wallpaper in my previous posts, but thought I would mention again that they also use their same minimal VOC wall paints to print their wallpaper and use FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved paper. Such a beautiful and eco friendly line! I also consulted with my wallpaper installer and she uses a paste that also has no VOCs, which was great for me.

I also had some hiccups with the lighting, but since the wallpaper wasn't going in until later, I could take my time and get it right. Here is the original light I had picked out...

When it arrived in person I still loved the style. The travertine back plate was a really nice touch and I loved the shades with the black trim. Here was my main problem...the metal finish. It was way more of a warm/copper brass than the gold brushed brass I was envisioning. I decided that it was more important to get a piece that was exactly what I wanted. So I returned this one and ordered this beauty...

We already have the two tiered Ventana chandelier in our family room, so I knew that I would like the finishes. It was also on sale at the time! I told my husband it really was a win/win because I was saving us money...Ha! I'm sure he appreciated that after how much I had already spent on the wallpaper!

Well, the wallpaper finally went up, and I'm totally in love. It totally transformed the space. We did have some issues with the new light once it arrived. Apparently it had a badly wired switch and wouldn't work when wired into the wall. I will say that I will continue to order from all modern.com in the future. I emailed them and let them know the problem and they got back to me the same day. They also let me know that I could donate or discard the one I had and immediately sent out a new one. Great customer service! The light is finally up, so I guess the third one is the charm! We are waiting for the final accessories (towel bar, TP holder etc.) to arrive. The mirror also has to be hung. I'm so anxious about making any holes in my beautiful paper, but it will have to happen sometime. At least there is a functioning powder room again, just no checking yourself out. I'll leave you with a sneak peek of the wallpaper and hope to have a final reveal soon!

One Room Challenge: Week Four

It's hard to believe that we are already going into the last two weeks. Yikes! I feel like everything is going to come together at the very end! I've ordered most of the key pieces and now it's playing the waiting game. The wallpaper installer is coming next week, so no wallpaper to show yet. I booked her as soon as I thought I was going to do this challenge, but she is so in demand that this was the soonest she could do it. I have no experience hanging wallpaper that isn't pre-pasted, so I figured that I would leave that to the professional, especially after the investment in the actual paper! Since there isn't much progress to show in the powder room I thought I would share some fun accessories I've run across. First up towels...

I want to play up the black and white accents with pattern and because there are no window treatments or pillows going in here towels are the next best way. I love the stripes in this natural Turkish towel. I'm trying to decide if I want to go more plush or go with the thinner Turkish. I think a nice stack would look good under the open vanity.

I really like this modern lacework pattern in this target towel. The band at the bottom would also add a nice pop of black!

There is something really appealing about this black and white romantic floral set.

This black and white Missoni towel is a nice option and it looks reversible!

I'm having a pair of these lovelies made and they should be arriving early next week! They will be black and white of course!

I have also been checking out some cute accesories for the counter. Here are a couple options I found. I think a Target and Homegoods run will be soon!

I just found out today that this light fixture is on it's way!

I already have this beauty too!

Things are starting to fall into place, I just need to make some final decisions on accessories. Hopefully I'll have room progress to show next week!

One Room Challenge: Week Three

So, not a lot has actually happened in the powder room itself, but look what arrived! So excited to get this put up. It's really beautiful in person!

I took a close-up of the paper to show all of the wonderful printed texture that comes through.

Here is an explanation of how they get that wonderful texture and how they are printed directly from the Farrow and Ball website:

Wallpapers are generally made using ink. Not ours. Determined to follow in our founder’s footsteps, we use traditional block and trough printing methods as well as our own richly pigmented paint, to give each design a sumptuous and tactile texture, unique to Farrow & Ball.

The chosen paint is applied to the etched surface of the block through a trough and roller, and the block is then carefully pressed onto the paper, like a stamp.

I also love that these papers are eco-friendly.
More from their site...

Our wallpapers are created using our eco friendly water based paints and paper sourced only from FSC® accredited.

I've also been researching a lot of bathroom fixtures. All lucite and brass of course! I thought I would share some of the great finds I've come across...

1. Lux Holdups - So beautiful these lucite towel bars are my top choice
2. CB2 - Love the modern design of this brass towel bar (there's also a TP holder)
3. CB2 - This acrylic towel bar is a great option that is more affordable than the lucite and brass.

While I was exploring the towel racks on CB2 I came across some great shelf options. I'm thinking my powder room might need a shelf.

Love this marble and brass shelf option. This might be my top contender. It's very similar to some others I found, but at a great price!

I kind of like the idea of the acrylic shelf so that the wallpaper still shines through.

I like the wood and brass combo of this little shelf.

I think this could be fun to do a grouping of floating brass shelf I need to decide where I'm going with these quickly and get them ordered fast!

One Room Challenge: Week Two

Today I'm sharing my design plan for our powder room, or at least the plan for now! So, here it is...

This powder room is going to be a nice mix of traditional and modern elements, which is kind of how we roll style-wise. The wallpaper I have selected is Farrow & Ball in the Lotus pattern. I went with the lightest color combination BP2007, which looks like a very light taupe with off-white. With the big scale in such a small space I really felt like it would be better to go with a colorway that didn't have too much contrast. I'm so excited to get this put up. It is scheduled to arrive tomorrow! I also want to do accents and accessories in black, gold and lucite...I love this stunning combo! I will share some more details soon.
Go check out the rest of the awesome ORC participants at Calling it Home!

One Room Challenge: Week One

Well, here we go...my very first One Room Challenge! I've been following the ORC for many years, and now I'm finally going to participate. This awesome challenge is hosted by Linda from Calling it Home. For those that are new to the ORC, it goes like this...20 designers are selected to participate in a challenge to transform a room in six weeks. Each Wednesday they blog about their progress and Thursday's are open to any guest participants, like me! I kind of decided late in the game so I'm a little nervous about getting everything done in time, but very excited to be a part of this super supportive community. I thought for my first ORC that I would start off small, so the room I will be doing is our downstairs powder room.

While the room is just fine, there is nothing really special about it. I've been wanting to add wallpaper somewhere in our house and now I have the perfect excuse to finally do it! I also want to replace fixtures, update our mirror and zhush it up with pretty accessories.

We had previously updated the sink and vanity so that will be staying. I also want to do something on the wall above the toilet, but I haven't quite figured out what direction I'm going in. I guess that's part of the fun!

The powder room is fairly small, but with high ceilings. I think the wallpaper will add some great visual interest and help fill that space.

One last picture with the lights off to show the light fixture that will soon be gone.

I'm not quite ready to reveal my full design plan, but definitely wanted to share some inspiration photos so you can get an idea of the direction I will be going in.

I love the idea of an oversized pattern, but in a more subtle neutral color way. Being a designer I love color, but in my spaces at home I'm a neutral girl through and through.

This space is divine! I just love the wallpaper pattern with the gold accents. I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to keep mine all silver or go for mixed metals and add in gold/brass accents...decisions, decisions!

I love this guest bath designed by Sue from the Zhush for the last ORC. She always designs beautiful spaces! I'm excited to see what she will be doing this time.

I thought I would leave you with a peek of the patterns and colorways that were in the running for the wallpaper. I just love getting all of the pretty paper samples! Makes me want to put wallpaper all around the house...I might have a slight problem...

Well, I hope to see you next Thursday where I will reveal my full design plan and some of the items I have chosen. I better go and get to work!

Some of my favorite things from 2015

Hard to believe that 2015 is coming to an end and it's almost 2016. One of my favorite memories this year was a surprise birthday trip my husband planned to Chicago. He told me that we were going there to pick out a handbag for my birthday. He knows how much I love my bags, but I had no idea what kind he was thinking of getting me! I've always loved the classic designs of Prada and admired them from afar. He was so sweet and said I could select one of my very own. Someone pinch me. I couldn't believe that one of them would finally be mine! This girl was over the moon, and so grateful to be able to experience that! Here is my little beauty...

The insides of this style have contrasting colors, and mine has a black inside. I also really liked the tan with the pop of red. So many pretty options!!!

Here are some details from our trip. We stayed at the Trump Towers and it was really nice because we could walk to all of the places we wanted to go. They even surprised me with a little cake. It was such a dream come true!

Furniture shopping in 2015

Just thought I would share some more house updates by showing some of the key furniture purchases we made in 2015. The one we use the most is our family room sectional. The designer in me really wanted two separate pieces, like a sofa and love seat. I also knew that a sectional suited our home body lifestyle better. We love to curl up on the couch to watch movies and hang out. Both my husband and I loved the look of the chesterfield sofa, so we came up with the idea to find a chesterfield sectional. It was an elegant, but comfortable option. I found out that Bernhardt made a great looking one that was also customizable.
We played around with different color and fabric options. There was a navy velvet in the running at one point. I still love that fabric, maybe for a piece in our formal some day! Then we narrowed it down to a charcoal gray color that was so soft.
When we finally decided to purchase our piece we went back to the furniture store and couldn't find our fabric in their book of swatches. Would you believe that out of all of the fabric options they carried they had decided to discontinue the one we picked! We then decided to go in a different direction...ivory. At the time I really wanted a linen fabric, which I still love, but the sales lady was able to talk me out of it. That was probably a good thing, because I'm not sure what I really thinking in purchasing a linen sofa with four pets. Oh wait, I know... I liked that way it looked... designer problems. In the end we decided on a more durable fabric that was easy to clean. The months leading up to the arrival I was really second guessing the fabric and the color choices, but once it arrived I was thrilled! Here it is the day we got it. Notice the old floors!

I've been adding pillows and different accessories that I will share soon. Here are some of the pillows that I had made from Motif Pillows. She makes fabulous pillow covers and will send you swatches to help you decide if you request them!

My husband also wanted to get a bigger TV for our family room, so the agreement was that I got to pick out a new tv/media piece of furniture. It was tough finding a piece that was long enough for this 75" TV while still looking nice in the space. At least he didn't get the 90"! I ended up finding a dining room buffet and we took the back piece off to let the electronics vent out of the back. Here she is, with a kitty hiding in there. I hope to add some more accessories to the wall around it. I have a couple ideas I hope to show soon and I will do a whole family room walk through!

Another big piece we purchased was a display cabinet. I really wanted to find something to showcase the milk glass collection that my Grandmother has slowly been handing down to me. I had narrowed it down to a few pieces. Here were the contenders. All great pieces for different reasons and in no particular order.

I finally decided that the last one fit our style the best and would be able to hold the collection I already had and also any future pieces. Here it is after it got delivered.

Marshall really wanted to be in the picture. Here it is with the light on. I really fell in love with the Chippendale style details on the front and the contrast color on the inside!

More styling details and better pictures to come soon!
